Description:Human monocytes are mononuclear cells with kidney- or bean-shaped nuclei that circulate in blood, bone marrow and spleen. They can sense inflammation lesion through chemokine receptors and pathogen recognition receptors and initiate immune defense by differentiating into macrophages or dendritic cells. Human peripheral blood monocytes (HPBM) are heterogeneous populations with each subset possesses distinct pathophysiological function in immune system. They can phagocytose microbes or dying cells, present antigens to T cells, or produce effector molecules such as cytokines, myeloperoxidase and superoxide which trigger inflammation response. Such advances have pointed many possibilities of monocyte as therapeutic target for immunological study.;
